Introduction
A domesticated animal is a wild animal that has been tamed. As such it can be used to produce resources, e.g.milk or wool. It is also possible to carry a domesticated animal that has been "objectified" and bring it to another location, indoors or just keep it in your inventory.
To domesticate an animal, you start by viewing the animals available at the location. From the location page, click the animal icon, and then click Domestication. Activating the radio button next to a pack of animals will high-light any possible action you may perform. In this case Taming. Clicking this will start a project to tame that animal.
When an animal has been domesticated it will appear on the Objects page, and you can pick it up, put it in a vehicle or building and so on. For the latter you need to build a trough and keep hay or feed in it. You can also use some feeding device, like wooden plate, platter or a sack with the food stored in it.
Preparations
It is wise to be somewhat prepared when trying to domesticate an animal. The taming project will require hay, which in turn is produced in a haystack. The domesticated animals will need hay or feed in a suitable container, like a trough, or they will surely abandon you very soon. Different animals have different food needs, so it can be a good idea to make different foods if you are not sure what is required. There are some tools you will need, for example a dung-fork.
Taming
The taming project will take at least one day up to a few days. The difference in time is loosely based upon the animal size, smaller animals take less time to tame.
The chance of successfully taming an animal varies from animal type to animal type. On the wiki the chance is denominated as easy, medium, hard or very hard.
Packs
When a domesticated animal is joined with a pack it will take up one of the resource gathering slots of the location. It is not exactly one animal per slot, so you can normally join a few animals to a pack before a second slot is occupied. When there are at least two animals in a pack, there is a chance they will produce offspring. To move, or butcher an animal, you first need to separate it from the pack to maki it a separate object again.
A common strategy seems to be to keep two animals in a pack, and when they produce offspring, one animal is separated and slaughtered. This is to keep the amount of feed you need to produce to a minimum.
