If you spawned in a developed location, it's most likely going to have active people and laws. It has taken years to develop the location, so it has established customs and you're supposed to adjust to them instead of vice versa.

Introduce yourself and read the laws. If there are no laws then they were most likely stolen by the previous newspawn. In that case, just use common sense. Don't punch anyone and you might think twice before picking up items or entering buildings. If you decide to do it anyway, justify your actions verbally or act either cold, scared or mentally retarded, then people are more likely to pity you instead of thinking you're a law-breaking jerk.

Bare Necessities

It's fairly important to get yourself a shield, but not as much as on primitive regions because the populations are likely going to be higher, reducing the chance of an animal targeting you out of all people. Also it might be possible to stay fed while working indoors, or animals may have been killed off or domesticated.

In most developed locations, there's no need to farm for your own food because it will be available in a container or handed out to people who contribute to the society. Ask if you can have some and the request will most likely be granted.

If there are a lot of buildings, a chance is you might get to claim one of them because some are probably abandoned. If there are only a few, they probably want to keep it compact and there's most likely an apartment building somewhere.

Work

If there are no notes about employment options, ask if the town is looking to hire people, if there are companies or if everything is centralized and so forth. Most locations are capitalistic and people earn things for themselves, but some locations might be communistic where everything is jointly owned. Try to adjust, what ever the case might be. Since you spawned there, it's natural for your character.

In case the people ignore you or otherwise don't seem to have any work available, it might be better to move on. There are usually maps available of the whole island. Locations with good resources are more likely to have active industry and jobs.

In advanced societies, there is generally more work available than in primitive ones. In addition to the usual resource harvesting and cooking, there's also refining, smelting, manufacturing, tailoring, vehicle and ship building, carpenting and so on.

Clothing

In an advanced society, it's more reasonable to expect everybody to have clothes, so unless the location is filled with tropical fruits or happens to be a desert, it's good to complain about the cold if you won't get handed clothes straight off the bat. Sometimes you might be required to make clothes for yourself, but at least resources will be offered. Modesty is another good excuse, you simply feel naked. And on the desert you need protection from the sun. They would be monsters not to provide any.

Many locations tend to give newspawns primitive clothes because you never know which ones are going to drop dead, but if you live long enough, you can usually get something better.

It's generally better not to loot dead bodies for clothes, because that can get you in big trouble. Some older people might strip bodies but they can do what they want because they're old. Especially if the deceased was young and didn't accomplish much in life.
