Every day, your character will automatically eat whatever nourishing food he or she has in inventory. You eat the type of food that you ate the last day, if you still have some left. If your character has no food, he or she will begin to starve. After twenty days without food, your character will die.
Order of Auto-eating
Less efficient foods, which weigh more per meal, are eaten before[1] the lighter more efficient ones, and that nutrional foods with no healing capabilities are eaten before those which can also be used for healing.
[1] As noted above, you will continue to eat the same food you ate the previous day -- therefore acquiring a stash of less efficient food will not automatically cause your character to switch diets.
