The Sou'wester or cowboy hat design was originally created by John B. Stetson from hide and fur. The design became popular with men in 19th century America for it's protective quality against the sun and elements. Especially among cowboys who's jobs consisted of work on the ranges. This version of the hat is worn by the infamous outlaw John Wesley Hardin.
