Can be compared to use of semi-finished products in manufacturing tools and motorcycles, although in the case of clothing, the base item can be used even without the finishing touch. Actually the best comparison to non-clothing items would be the diamond encrusted steel sabre, which gains no extra function from the added embellishments.
