The Eat button next to a food item allows you to eat a healing food. When you click it, if you are damaged and the item is a healing food, you will be prompted with the amount you need to remove all damage, and asked how much of the healing food you wish to eat to heal.
"You cannot eat to gain strength" is a common error message after clicking this icon. It means that the food item you selected is a nourishing food, and not a healing food.
"You do not need any more strength" is the other common error message. It means that you are not damaged.
