The [[Chupacabra]] is a terrestrial monster that can attack travelers on the road. There is a random chance of it attacking a [[Vehicle_speed#Walking|walker]] or a driver/passenger in a vehicle. The chance of it attacking seems to increase depending on the number of times in recent days that its victim has used its [[Skills#Fighting|fighting]] skill (including [[dragging]] attempts).

Once the initial attack occurs, the creature continues to attack the same victim once per game day for five consecutive days. Additional passengers may attack the creature, but the chupacabra will continue to attack the same person for the five days on the road. If the monster is not killed or chased off (by dropping its health below 50%), it will then randomly attack a new victim. If the victim dies or is killed within those five days, the vehicle and any passengers in it are dumped back at their origin point. The body of the victim and all of their contents are spilled on the ground as when one normally dies on the road. Any fuel that was in the vehicle will also be gone.

If the victim is able to arrive at their destination, the chupacabra will cease attacking. However, this merely pauses the attack. Even if the victim waits for five days at a given location, the attack will resume once the victim returns to the road and the monster's attack strength increases by five percent every time the victim goes off the road. Once five days on the road passes, if the victim remains alive, the chupacabra will give up and search for a new victim. Note that due to the random selection process, there is always the chance that the same victim will be attacked again.

Weapons made of [[bones]] or [[obsidian]] appear to have the greatest chance of dealing successful damage against the creature. Metal weapons of a [[Skill weighting|skill-weight]] between 40% to 60% also have a chance of success, although to a lesser degree. Weapons on the extreme ends of the skill-weight, such as a [[steel battle axe]] or a [[crossbow]], have very little chance, if any, of landing a successful hit.

If killed, the chupacabra drops an inedible form of rancid meat, large bones, horn, lizard skin, rancid eggs, and sometimes (depending on random chance) additional special items like the crumbling weapons of former victims or the [[Darkening Cloak of the Old Ones]].
