The Cantr Chat Channel is an Internet-Relay-Chat (IRC) Channel. A Java applet from the Cantr site is available here.

Alternatively, there are many, free to use, IRC clients available for download. The most commonly used is mIRC, although there are many others available such as ChatZilla(built into Mozilla), XChat for both Windows and Unix, XiRCON for Windows and ircle for Macintosh.

The set-up details for each client do differ, but they will all need you to input the following information:

  • Server: irc.gnug.org
  • Port: 6667
  • Channel: #cantr

Clicking here may also work if your client is set up with your browser.

You will also need to set your firewall to allow the client to connect. If you can't get connected, please contact the Communications Department

For those not used to IRC irchelp.org is useful. Just remember to type:
/nick
then a space follwed by your desired nickname when you log on.

We will not tolerate spam or excessive swearing on the channel, or any breach of the Capital Rule (See: Game Rules).

For reference, these are the server rules set by gnug.org:

irc.gnug.org Server Rules -

The server rules are quite simple. Follow them and you'll have a pleasant stay. Break them and you'll be gone. Nothing substitutes for common sense either.

The rules are:

  1. No warez at all.
  2. No fserves or xdcc at all.
  3. No channels explicitly for pornography and no pornography in channels that prohibit it.
  4. No war scripts and no trojans and no DCCing of any viruses or trojans.
  5. No ban evasion.
  6. No nick stealing or impersonating others.
  7. No flaming of others.
  8. No nuking and no clones.

ircbot policy. We aren't against the usage of bots in general. However, please check with an IRCOp before bringing one onto the server. As a general guideline, no bots should be put in a channel without first getting approval from the channel owner/operators.
