Description and uses
The pilum is a reasonably powerful weapon that can be made without leather and uses less steel than other weapons of the same effectiveness.
Real-life context
A javelin historically used by the Roman infantry. It was thrown by the soldier before engaging in hand-to-hand combat with the short sword (gladius). Later versions of the pilum had a shaft that would partially break on impact and hinder the enemy's movement.
