Coal is needed for producing stål and is often used for making järn as well. Coal can be gathered at a speed of 250 grams per day, or 500 grams if you have a pickaxe. If you build a kolborr you can gather 1000 grams per day.
Coal can also be used to fuel kolugns, which can cook food.
