Coal is needed for producing steel and is often used for making iron as well. Coal can be gathered at a speed of 250 grams per day, or 500 grams if you have a pickaxe. If you build a coal drill you can gather 1000 grams per day.
Coal can also be used to fuel coal ovens, which can cook food.
