Description and uses
The pilum is a reasonably powerful weapon that can be made without leather and uses less steel than other weapons of the same effectiveness.
Real-life context
A spear or polearm-type weapon historically used by the Roman Legion. Its primary use was in hand, but it was light enough to be thrown if needed.
