Whoever changed the menu on the vehicles, please change it back. It was much more user friendly the previous way.

The alphabetical listing under manufacture it NOT GOOD.

It was more user-friendly the other way listing boats vs non-engined land vehicles vs engined land vehicles. Please change it back.

- Forum post and message by AngelSpice

* The current system for manufacture information was decided on by, if I recall correctly, me, User:Nick_Roberts and User:Kabl00ey. It makes maintenance easier and parallels the in-game manufacturing system more closely. I'm working on fixing some things with the system (notably the flaw that hides the category list when you first click on a link to the category page), and we could create subcategories for boats, land vehicles, engined land vehicles and non-engined land vehicles. Would that be acceptable? Sho 14:10, 25 Sep 2005 (EDT)
**I do think that separating out the vehicles by type rather than alphabetically is better. This is supposed to help you and it would help better if they were separated out. I don't think that the layout of the wiki needs to exactly mirror the game. (ie: go to manufacture then go to vehicles and get an alphabetical list) It just seems that this last change has made things much more cumbersome and click-intensive to get the information you need. AngelSpice
***What sort of "information you need" are we talking here, and what method of getting to it is it that the current system is interfering with? For looking up a specific vehicle, typing the vehicle name into the search box has always been the easiest way and the way envisioned by the MediaWiki designers. No matter what system we end up using, there's no system that lets you just go to the main page and get any information with, say, two clicks. The old system that you espouse required just as many clicks from the main page as the current one. Sho 15:14, 25 Sep 2005 (EDT)
****Well, I have to say I really don't like the new layout... but anyway, if it remains the way it is, the vehicle pages should be updated to say "requires an engine" or "does not require an engine" as the new layout doesn't show that. User:The Surly Cantrian 16:17, 26 Sep 2005 (GMT)

Could we have a new sub-section, listing things that can't be built inside a vehicle? Or would that fit better in the [] page? (can't figure out how to link to it, it just adds a category)
*I think the best way to do that would be to make a new page about locations in general, or about where things can be built. THere are several pages that would benefit from a link there. And you can link to a category by prepending a colon: :Category:Water Vehicles, for example. Sho 11:49, 6 January 2007 (EST)

*The base speeds are not consistant. Example, passenger car says 0.54 while sloop says 50. Ceselb 13:54, 6 February 2007 (EST)
** They don't have to be consistent - Land vehicles use a different movement algorithm to Water vehicles - see Vehicle speed for more details --Chris Johnson 18:31, 6 February 2007 (EST)

Spider:

First of all, Cantr has seen a lot of quirky characters. People in a town might be looking for someone who can contribute to the community and make oneself useful and if they get yet another dumb guy who talks funny and breaks the laws because he can't read, people may start thinking "Oh great, not this again". Disabilities can be different in Cantr compared to the real world, still, we get the idea of them from the real world so it shouldn't be too far off. You need to claim your place in the society and that means not only good role playing but sometimes being helpful and not just a burden. Disabilities are tough to play and it requires skill to do it with style.

Be consistent
If you start off as a village idiot, you can't just suddenly stop being stupid when you get tired of it. It has happened and each time it has it was very much frowned upon because it was poorly role played, if at all. You may slowly role play learning things but you'll character will never instantly and without reason get smart. Likewise if your character is blind or deaf, they can't miraculously snap out of it.

If your character starts off as illiterate, they shouldn't suddenly figure it out unless someone goes through the trouble of teaching them, and even after that it's good to write like the character speaks to maintain consistency.

There will be moments that make you curse silently that you're unable to act even though you know as a player that something bad is going to happen. Your blind character might see someone stealing a lot of things but won't be able to tell who it was or where they went, not even that there was something illegal going on. Your dumb character might be tricked into a trap or be given a bad trade rate because he can't count, but you just have to play along. It makes the game much more fun that there are gullible characters and not everybody knows everything.

When swapping between characters, you might forget who you're playing and with handicapped characters the mix-ups are usually more visible and drastic than with others. That's why you should spend a moment in getting into character and concentrate on absorbing the role so that you don't end up speaking with your mute character or editing a note with your illiterate character. If despite all efforts you end up making a mistake, you should correct it as soon as possible so that others won't start role playing as if your character was miraculously healed.

Be realistic
If your character is handicapped, don't ignore it in the day to day, if the character isn't smart then maybe they shouldn't be working with complex machines or have trouble with trading and trade rates. Another example is if you are blind then maybe driving or using large machines isn't for them. You set the limits as to what they can or cannot do, but again, remain consistent with it.

If your character is mute and communicates through writing, bear in mind that actually writing by hand, especially if the letters are drawn in the dirt instead of using some sort of a pen, is rather slow business. Therefor it's better to abbreviate things as much as you can without obscuring the meaning of the message too badly. It doesn't look realistic if someone is able to come up with a lengthly written response as fast as the player can type it.

Making it show
Generally you shouldn't overdo it. Being subtle is always good, although it may sometimes bring you close to ripping your hair out, but generally it pays off in the end if you just stay patient. It's a great feeling for both the person figuring out that your character is handicapped and you for managing to get the message through without being too blatant.

Nowadays there are blindfolds that can be used to hint at others that your character can't see, but mentioning something about white eyes also helps. Using a walking stick for feeling your surroundings is pretty widely used since walking sticks are cheap to make. There are a wide variety of ways to not only enhance your role playing, like finding out more of the disability, but to get your message across.

Breaking laws with a disabled character
Sometimes people start pretending they're illiterate or deaf just to get out of trouble after getting caught stealing, that's alright, but if you decided straight off the bat that your character is disabled, it's best to make it show, even if it was in a subtle way (and a subtle way is usually the best) in order to tell you apart from all the trolls and suicidal newspawns. React to someone attacking you, not only physically but emotionally will set you apart. Act confused if your character doesn't know what's happening to him or why. Ask what's going on if your character can talk. Disabled characters are often treated unfairly because other people don't realize they're different from the majority of people.

Spider:

Talking like one
Like all characters in the game, players get their ideas from the real world but it should be noted that characters need to be developed in the game so it might not be best to enter the game speaking a certain way. There is no set way for pirates to speak in Cantr, most of the time, speak like normal people but there are those that have certain accents or styles to their speech and so, to each their own.

Preferred vehicles
There is a wide variety of ships that can be built so your choice will not only be affected by your needs, but also by what you can afford. There are some ships in the game that that are fast and carry a lot, but are expensive and cheap slow ones. Most of the pirates preferred the darter and dinghy because of their unique characteristic of not being able to dock to, but that has changed now, all ships can be docked to, but only with certain other ships and so the darter is still currently the most popular ship.

It is good to be nearly untouchable, but speed is always great to have on your side to make speedy escapes. It all depends on what your needs, area or intentions are when picking a type of ship so think long and hard as to what you need.

Pirates with a crew might prefer a raker or a galleon since their storage capacity is vast, they are faster than the small vessels and can be further enhanced with the addition of masts and sails, and can be equipped with cabins and cargo holds to hold prisoners and protect loot. Their drawback is that they cannot dock directly to the shore and can be docked by various boats.

Risks and strategies
A pirate ship is most vulnerable right after undocking, so the perfect raid is timed right before the sailing tick takes place, allowing the boat to move away from the vicinity of the shore before the townspeople have time to retaliate. When a boat docks to a ship, it cannot be shaken off by any means so the situation might quickly turn dangerous.

Usually it's unlikely that several people are awake at the time of a pirate attack, that any of them would possess a key to a vehicle capable of docking to the pirate vessel, and even more unlikely that the defenders have more than one crowbar, if any, but in the worst case scenario, a pirate ship might be docked by for example a longboat with several people carrying crowbars and iron shields. The pirates may have tried to attack these people while in town and will be unable to strike again for a day, or even if they hadn't previously attacked these particular people, they might still be exhausted from hitting others and unable to deal significant damage. With luck, the docked people might be able to break through the lock in less than a day, forcing the pirates to retract to cabins, allowing the attackers to dock the ship back to the harbour and encourage the townspeople to board the ship. If the deck is stuffed full of loot, the people might be able to fill the remaining space so that pirates are unable to exit their cabins, leaving them trapped while the rest of the locks are broken. But a more likely scenario is that only one person is awake during the attack and even if they had a boat and a crowbar, they'll be too afraid to risk hanging along for what might turn out to be days.

If somebody is clearly awake during a pirate attack, it might be worthwhile to unlock the boat straight after undocking, and if someone comes after with a dinghy and docks to the pirate ship, they'll stumble right in through the door while attempting to break the lock. But this will require somebody to be awake to lock the boat before the intruder has time to realize they've walked into a trap. In this situation it's also good to have a cabin or a cargo hold to drag the intruder into, since he might still be able to break the lock from the inside and also to dock the ship back to the harbour.

Intimidating a lonely attacker might be worth while, since if they see a lot of pirates shouting threats at them, they might fail to realize that they're too tired to cause significant damage or have already used their one hit per day.

Violent vs. nonviolent approach
Hitting people is likely to make them more angry and makes you tired, which makes you more vulnerable to retaliation and dragging. Also, every move takes time. Hitting people can be profitable if someone is already wounded and likely to be easy to kill, or if wounding people enables dragging them to the ship or a seized building. It can also be used to create chaos and panic, but if people realize you aren't really able to kill anyone, the effect will wear off. A wise strategy would be to send a scout to live in the targeted town to find out everyone's fighting skill and strength (some clues can be acquired by trying to drag a person into some locked place for which neither the target or the dragger has a key) and who's carrying valuable keys or equipment. The primary target should be attacked by several pirates, preferably with a strong expert breaking through the target's defense to clear the way for the others. If the target is killed and keys are acquired, the pirates may either loot everything and sail away or to attempt to drag people into the gained building(s).

If you don't hit anyone and just grab what ever resources you find lying around, you won't be tired and even if someone was awake to hit you, they're unlikely to cause significant damage.

Radios
Radios have made piracy more difficult since towns can be warned without anyone having to travel between them to bear the message. Fortunately there are still a lot of regions that don't have this advanced technology. If a region has a lot of radios, well-equipped pirates should try to make themselves a vehicle radio receiver and be aware of the frequencies used on the region so that they can hear if nearby towns have been warned. A ship radio transmitter could also be used to broadcast false information to confuse the people, since there's no way of telling where a message comes from.

There are all kinds of thieves. Those that sneakily enter buildings when you're not watching, those that steal everything you have and possibly even kill you after they gained your trust and those that steal your only vehicle making them look at you while unable to follow you. Though there are certain kinds that are frowned upon, those being the characters that their whole life don't act a certain way and then with no in-game reason change and steal everything, please keep everything in game and make sure the role playing makes sense and not change just because you're bored. This article will help you understand thieves, and how to play them a bit better.

Note that you shouldn't make your thief exactly like explained in this article. Be creative!

Talk like a thief!
Or rather, don't! Thieves are usually smooth talkers that are able to talk themselves out of any situation. Try to blend in with your surroundings. Act like a normal, hard-working villager and when they realized you're not that nice, it's too late.

Stealing
There are a lot of ways to steal, and a lot of things to steal. Varying from vehicles, keys, resources and tools.

* Stealing vehicles
** Simply trying to enter vehicles to see if they're open can sometimes give interesting results. Note that no one can see you tried to enter the vehicle when it's locked.
** Gaining a vehicle's owner's trust can be very useful. Once gained, it will be only a matter of time before the the right opportunity comes around, but keeping the vehicle can be as hard as stealing it, so be ready to make modifications to your new ride and expect people coming after it sooner or later.
** Just as with land vehicles, you have to wait for the right opportunity to make your move. Boats tend to be easier to steal because it is usual to have a crew but the bigger the crew, the less the opportunity to steal, so pick your targets. One last note of advice is to be aware of other boats around because once it is found out you stole, you are bound to be chased down.

As a last reost, you can always wait until everyone is on it and then lock it and kill them. (This won't be as easy to do when they have crowbars or the tools to make one)

* Stealing resources and tools
** There are various ways to steal in the game, specially if no one is paying attention. With all things, you have to know your targets and that you will probably be more successful with one kind of group, like sleepers, than another. It also depends on how you steal, be it walking into a room with no one in it or claiming resources on the ground, just have to develop your own way of doing things.
** Sometimes you might be able to steal tools by finishing an abbandoned repair project and picking up the tool when it's finished, but this usually works only when no one's watching.
** Also you might borrow a tool from someone, then keep it for so long that they forget they ever gave it to you. Or just wait that they go inside, then leave town. By the time someone tells them which direction you took, you'll be long gone.

Seizing the moment vs. planning ahead
Perfect timing often separates a good thief from the dead one. If you've spent a while in a town, you might notice that some hours tend to be less busy than others. If you're going to be stealing openly, it's best to do it when most people are asleep to give you a head start. It's also good to see if many people have access to vehicles, since if you're traveling slower than your chasers, you're pretty much doomed to fail.

But there are also moments in which a perfect chance for robbery will present itself and you need to make a fast decision before the chance is lost. If you're the only person awake when someone dies and drops a bunch of keys, there's a good chance one of them is for a vehicle or at least a building. There is considerable risk involved in such an act, such as none of the keys being useful to that town or having someone wake up doing the same thing. It is best to quickly prepare a reason why you picked them up if you are backing off but if you're not, discovering quickly what you've laid your hands on should dictate how you proceed. Depending on the town, it might be best to be prepared with healing food and a fight because no one likes a thief, specially if they can do something about it.

The more crowbars there are, the smaller the chances of surviving by hiding in buildings. People might also change the lock on one of the buildings you have access to and use it as a trap. Likewise you can trick people into running after you into unlocked buildings, then lock the door after they come inside to trap them in there. However people are likely to learn fast not to follow you into buildings if you do this.

People are also likely to taunt you to make you stop and reply to them. It's better not to fall into this trap. If you have something to say, either drag a note under the door or write what you're going to say in Notepad, wait a while to let everyone think you've stopped running around, then pop out quickly to copypaste your message to the talk to all box and run back to safety.

Trust
When planning to steal important vehicles that have lots of important resources in them, or trying to get access to an important building, you'll need to very lucky or somehow gain the people that have the keys their trust.

It's unlikely that you'll get a chance to just steal a boat in the developed islands of Cantr. But if you are paying a visit to one of the barely developed islands, then you will have a good chance to steal boats and other vehicles.

This combined with being trusted will be definitely worth it. It might take some time for the people to trust you, but once they do your chances will increase. Simply work hard for little pay and be nice and active. You could even lower yourself to nothing but a mere slave of someone, and once your boss isn't looking, use that chance and start sailing away!

You could also seduce the captain of a ship. Once he's stuck in your web, he'll gladly give you the key of his boat. (If roleplayed well, of course. No one likes boring women.)

There are all kinds of possibilities! Be creative and think up your own. Make good use of the chances you'll encounter and never give up! If they don't trust you, show them that you can be trusted! They say you don't work hard enough? Work twice as hard!

Spider:

Knowing your community
There are different kinds of towns. Some are based on individualism and everybody does what they want - this kind of towns don't care much for having a leader. The leader or leaders come to power in various ways, there is no one defined way as how to climb (if there is) a ladder to become the leader of a town. They have various duties as the leader, here are some examples given by the people: to help the newspawns get adjusted, issue building permits or take care of selling abandoned houses, decide what to do with the items of the dead people and take care of things that affect the community as a whole.

Then there are close-knit communities that work like a single family or a company. The town leader may be responsible for starting projects, keeping a stock of resources and sending resource runners on their way.

When a new town leader rises to power, they might have some revolutionary ideas as to how things are to be run which usually don't turn out well, in general, people like the things the way they are so it's better to make slow transitions.

Human resources
A good town leader knows their people and is aware of their personal goals and needs. Cantrians tend to prefer doing everything on their own, so you might have trouble shifting people to work for the community instead of themselves even with equal or better pay.

Material assets
You naturally need to be aware of the resources and machinery a town possesses, so that you know what you have and what you need. With the various towns comes the various ranges of assets that can be found in them; You can come across a town with few buildings, one devoted to public machines or find a town with many buildings that contain machines but you ultimately end up finding that there are various buildings with the same machines that really don't get used. Likewise, people tend to gather resources and tools in private stashes and might be ready to hand or lend them out, if someone just asked.

Location
If your town borders a sea, it's likely to get a lot more visitors and will be more lively than inland communities. But this involves the risk of getting hit by pirates and it's good to think ahead for these situations.

Non-coastal towns tend to be more peaceful, but that is not to say they are without danger. You have to take the good with the bad.

Keeping control
The amount of control that a leader exerts on his or her citizens depends entirely on their leadership philosophy, but it is impossible to govern a town without having some kind of power. The leader of a town will presumably have access to all the resources, tools, weapons and machinery owned by the town. This is what gives them the power to govern their town.

To leverage this power and use it to run your community effectively, you must be aware of the loyalties and ambitions of all members of the community. If it is likely that somebody has aspirations to usurp your leadership, kidnap people or steal from the town, it would be best to take steps to insure minimal damage done by taking steps you see fit to restrict their actual fighting power. Similarly, if any of your people have proven their loyalty to you and gained your trust, trust should be reciprocated in any manner you see fit, being great access around the town, resources, etc. Trust, as you'll learn, is best earned and not given away.

Relations with neighboring towns
Resources and trade
A town may be self-sufficient when it comes to food, but they generally need to import at least something to be able to carry out various projects. Towns have their own resources and some can have certain resources that can be in demand which will make trades much easier for the town. Like most things, there is a wide range of resources which not only vary in rarity but also in value and it is up to you to figure out in the game what is the best local resource, if any, to exploit. Cantr is constantly growing and a resource that was once worthless can become the most prized around the world.

You generally try to export things to towns that don't have the resource in question or don't have the machinery to gather it as effectively as your town does, and you import from places that offer the best trade rates. Trading can be good for a town, but sometimes it can back fire such as a town you thought friendly can use your own resources against you, so make sure to forge strong relationships.

Reputation
If your town is known as a friendly place with fair trade rates, people are more likely to visit. Also if you maintain good relations with your neigbours, they're likely to assist you in stopping thieves or offer support if you get attacked by pirates.

Then there are communities that prefer to look tough and not have anyone dare to mess with them. Towns like this may be hated by their neighbours but if you let them know that you're fair with people who obey your laws, good people have no reason to feel threatened. Helping neighbouring towns to take down criminals will earn you more respect and people will turn to you in their hour of need.

The first thing you should know about weapons and protection is that Cantr II is not a "Hack and Slash" game. Even so, new weapons and shields are being added to not only add variety to your armament selection, but also to help role play your character. In Cantr, effectiveness of a weapon is not only decided by the character's health and tiredness but skill and strength and which of these the weapon benefits more from, such as bows usually require high skill to reach their full potential and bladed weapons usually require high strength. Still, there is more randomness to how effective a weapon will be that is added to this which falls into a range, this usually stays within the average of the character, but in an extremely rare chance, it can cause damage far beyond, or below, what is normal for the character. It is reasonable to expect the same behavior from shields when protecting yourself from damage. You can only attack an individual once per day. However, in any society, there are instances when violence is necessary.

Training Weapons
Not everyone is spawned with natural talents in combat. Even those who are, might wish to increase their abilities, but they will quickly find that training with weapons will carry a heavy price in healing food, thus, weapons that do minimal damage were made. But they are not just weapons, items such as tools, furniture and even parts to tools can do low damage, enough to use to train.

There are far more used for training, depending on the characters, but this is a list of the weakest weapon. They might be the weakest, but the skills gained when used isn't dependent on the item and damage, but the amount of "force" used, ie.: 100%, 90%, 80%, etc...

*Waster

Basic Weapons
Weapons that may require basic bone tools and don't need machinery or metal to make are ideal for newspawns. But even these weapons aren't free and require effort because most of them are usually made from wood and/or bones and killing enough animals to make a weapon isn't usually easy.

In combat situation, basic weapons can be blocked nearly by all shields. However, even a basic weapon will increase the damage you do to animals and to people, if you bypass their shields.
Bladed Weapons
Most of the better weapons are more complex, being split up into several pieces, requiring metals and various tools and even machines. Most bladed weapons have two parts and can be made not only from steel but from bronze as well. To build the blade, you require an small sharpening block in the room, as well as a flatter, set hammer, peen hammer, sledgehammer and chisel in your inventory while working on the project. The other part of the weapon varies widely; check each weapon for more information. The separate parts are combined in the end to complete the weapon.

Some bladed weapons can be upgraded to look much more prestigious, but it does not increase its combat effectiveness. They also focus more on on strength rather skill, but as always, there are exceptions.
Bows
Bows are probably the most complex weapons in the game to construct. You'll need to start a project for the bow you want and add all of the required objects. They are all made of wood and some require iron and steel, and require tools like a knife, or a carving knife. These weapons focus more on skill rather than strength.

To create almost any bow you'll need a bowstring. This can be made out of practically any clothing material, or sinew in the case of the primitive bow. You'll need a twiner to create string, and then a string jig along with a server to create a bowstring.

To assemble any bow except the primitive one, you'll need a bow stringer in the room.

These weapons don't really fall into a set category and can focus on skill or strength, but most are metal based and one or two can have unique abilities.

Shields
The most effective shield you have will automatically be used in defending your character upon the event of you being attacked by another character or animal. Your shield has a potential to be effective or not effect the damage dealt at all. If your blocking is effective, you will block a random amount of damage of their attack, based on the quality of your shield, your tiredness, strength, your skills, and the similar factors affecting the attacker.

When your shield is defending you from an attack, it is defending with the max possible that you can do with it at the time. So do not be alarmed if you block 30 percent damage from a bare fist, it does not mean you blocked 30 percent damage, it means thats how much you can block and a fist is has a lot less damage dealing power. If your protection is not enough, it will tell you how much damage got through, if this is more than enough to protect you, you won't be hurt.

A buckler is the weakest shield in the game, but, there is also an item in the game that offers even less protection. It is an economic choice for decent protection against animals and is unique because it is hide to other character's sight. They require a small amount of wood and hide, and a hammer to construct.

Bone shields are a wise thing to build for a character without much access to anything. They can be created without the use of anything other than bones and a little hide, making it probably the easiest shield to make. You'll need some small bones as well as some large bones, and a knife to construct it. Luckily, bone will do. Also, the shield can be upgraded to have have feathers, requiring a needle and feathers, but it does not increase its effectiveness, only looks.

The Steel buckler is a much stronger version of the regular buckler, being made from just steel. It, like the regular buckler, is hidden from sight which can be very useful but it is not as easy to make.

A wooden shield is ideal for young characters, as it does not take much refining to get. All you need to do is get 500 grams of wood, which can be gathered as a raw resource, unlike iron. While not quite as good as an iron shield, this will protect against many animal and newspawn-gone-crazy attacks.

The bronze shield is unique because it requires the metal bronze and a hammer to be made. The metal does not seem to be too common in the Cantr world, yet, but for those lucky enough to gain some bronze, the shield offers great protection.

The targe not only rivals the bronze shield in effectiveness, but is unique shield (1 of 2) in that it has both offensive and defensive capabilities, but since the attack value is so small, it is unlikely anyone would rely on it as a primary weapon.

A chitin shield is a rare item that is made from the shell of a scarab. It is another shield that shares the same protection power as the targe and bronze shield.

A tortoiseshell shield can be made from the shell of a desert tortoise. It gives more protection than the three previous mentioned shields and a little less protection than a scutum.

A scutum is one of the heaviest shields in the game. It requires 1500 grams of wood and a bronze carving knife or iron carving knife. This shield takes 8 days to make and is a bit better then a tortoiseshell shield. If you have a limited supply of iron but want great protection and don't mind the weight, the scutum is for you.

An iron shield used to be the best protection Cantr could offer, now it is the third best shield in the game. Only the biggest beasts of animals, and the strongest weapons can get through it. Nowadays it can be improved to a kite shield, which is slightly better. Requires a hammer to make.

The kite shield is an improved version of the iron shield and the second best shield in Cantr. It's made by attaching leather guigue and enarmes and some extra iron to a basic iron shield. A full set of weapon-smithing tools is required. The kite shield can be embellished by plating it with gold, silver or platinum, but this is merely to show off wealth and doesn't make the shield stronger. The [[kite shield] is the second shield that can act as a weapon, but like the other, because they aren't designed for attacking, it deals low damage.

Steel scutum is the current best shield and the heaviest shield in Cantr. It's made by reinforcing a wooden scutum with steel and iron and attaching leather straps like on the kite shield. A full set of weapon-smithing tools is required.

Tools
Certain tools, generally for their own specialized uses in manufacturing, can double as a weapon implement. These are usually poor in their effectiveness, but some can be just as good, if not better, than the average weapon.

These weapons don't really fall into a set category and can focus on skill or strength, but most are metal based and one or two can have unique abilities.

List of Other Weapons
*Atlatl
*bagh-nakh
*Pilum
*War hammer
*Whip

Shields
The most effective shield you have will automatically be used in defending your character upon the event of you being attacked by another character or animal. Your shield has a potential to be effective, or not effect the damage at all. If your blocking is effective, you will block a random amount of damage of their attack, based on the quality of your shield, your tiredness, strength, your skills, and the similar factors affecting the attacker. It should also be noted that how much you block can be completely random and not being effect my anything at all, i.e., you block 10 wiht an iron shield and are in perfect health and skillful fighter, though this is rare, it is possible.

It is possible for your shield blocking value to be higher than the damage that the attacker would have caused without blocking at all. So do not be alarmed if you block 30 percent damage from a bare fist!

Bone shields are a wise thing to build for a character without much access to anything. They can be created without the use of anything other than bones and a little hide. You'll need some small bones as well as some large bones, and a knife to construct it. Luckily, bone will do.

A buckler is an economic choice for decent protection against animals. They require a small amount of wood and hide, and a hammer to construct.

A wooden shield is ideal for young characters, as it does not take much refining to get. All you need to do is get 500 grams of wood, which can be gathered as a raw resource, unlike iron. While not quite as good as an iron shield, this will protect against almost all animal and newspawn-gone-crazy attacks.

A scutum is by far the heaviest shield and second best in the game. It requires 1500 grams of wood and a bronze carving knife or iron carving knife. This shield takes 8 days to make and is a bit better then a wooden shield. If you have a limited supply of iron but want great protection, the scutum is for you.

A tortoiseshell shield can be made from the shell of a desert tortoise. It gives almost as much protection as a scutum.

A chitin shield is a rare item that is made from the shell of a scarab.

An iron shield is the best protection cantr has to offer. Only the biggest beasts of animals, and the strongest weapons can get through it. Certainly an essential for combat. Requires a hammer to make.

The targe is the most unique shield, as it has both offensive and defensive capabilities.

Tools
Certain tools, generally for their own specialized uses in manufacturing, can double as a weapon implement. These are usually poor in their effectiveness.

The wiki lists vehicle speeds in units of pixels per day. This article details how they are computed.

Concepts
Vehicle constants
Each land vehicle or ship has a base speed and a weight effect, which are listed on the vehicle's own wiki page.

The base speed determines the speed at which the vehicle moves, were there no load. A vehicle with a larger base speed will usually go faster than a vehicle with a smaller base speed. Base speeds of ships and land vehicles are not comparable, because the land vehicle's base speed must be multiplied by the road factor.

The weight effect determines how sensitive a vehicle's speed is to the load on the vehicle. A vehicle with a larger weight effect will be slowed less by a heavy load.

Load weight
The load on a vehicle is determined by adding the weights of all the items on board. Objects and raw materials are added wherever they are. Machinery, including engines and locks, are also counted in the load. Passengers are counted as weighing 60000 grams each.

Road factor
Land vehicle speeds (but not walking) are affected by the type of road being travelled on. A list of road types, and their associated road factors: Road#Types of roads

Formulas
Walking
A character with an empty inventory travels at a speed of 10 units per day on any road type. Tiredness and damage have no effect on traveling speed (this is true for vehicles as well).

Walking speed = 10 - (inventory weight)/5000

Road vehicles
Vehicle speed = (base speed)*(road factor) - (load / weight effect)

Water vehicles
Ship speed = (base speed) - (load / weight effect)

All characters in Cantr have a set of skills. When you character spawns, a combination of the genes of two other characters on that location, with some random variation, will determine your character's genes. These genes will stay constant for the duration of your character's lifetime. The genes are the initial values of the skills of your character. Skills can change during the character's lifetime.

When working on a project or being involved in fighting or hunting, skills appear along the following spectrum. From least to most effective: Awkwardly, Novicely, Efficiently, Skillfully, Expertly. The skill is listed in the character description. If no skill is listed, that means none is applicable and everyone is equally efficient at that particular project.

A smelting furnace, sometimes referred to as a smelter, is a machine used for creating metals from their ores. A primitive smelting furnace can also be used to create iron and bronze, but a smelting furnace is required in order to create aluminium or steel. While smelting furnace takes more resources and time to build than it's primative counterpart, and cannot be built outside, it processes the resources more efficiently; you need less ingredients to create any amount of a metal using it.
