Welcome to the Cantr II wiki! These pages have been designed to help you learn more about the free, browser-based, role-playing game (RPG) Cantr II, learn all the tricks and tips that are useful when playing, and get explanations of the basic skills needed for survival and further progress in the game. These pages are maintained by the general player base, not by the Cantr staff, and whenever you feel some information is incorrect or missing, feel free to add it yourself.

Just a basic rule that is essential: These pages are about any out-of-character information on the game and on how to play the game. In-character information, like personal histories or maps of the Cantr world, is NOT allowed on these pages. As a rule of thumb, you can simply say that no characters' names or location names should ever appear on any of these pages.

This wiki is to help increase your understanding of the world of Cantr. This does not necessarily mean that your character must pretend he knows everything in the wiki. And keep in mind that the wiki is OOC, so don't speak about it in character.

At the root of these principles should be Cantr's mission and the definition of the world of Cantr.
The Principles for Deciding numbers are basic guidelines to help maintain consistency.
Cantr’s mission is to foster creativity, learning, and communication in a world simulating the challenges of real life.
Principles
Principles are in order of precedence and are directly used to justify decisions to change or maintain Cantr's game mechanics.
* Programming: There are technical limitations to the mechanics and to what can be changed (this comes first because it affects everything below); however, over time some of these technical limitations may be overcome.
* Capital Rule: There are limitations to enforce and encourage following the Capital Rule.
* Challenging environment: Characters and consequences of actions are restricted by the environment. Characters must overcome these challenges (possible with collaboration).
* Slow-paced: The game is slow-paced (players don't need to log in all the time, where once a day is considered normal).
* Collaboration: People depend on other people, and there is advantage to working with other people (even if there are social challenges).
* Communication: The preferred action in Cantr is speaking (or roleplaying), which implies at least one other character to be within hearing distance.
* User-friendly: Mechanics shouldn't be tedious for players (but can be for characters).
* Real life: The game should reflect the way things work in real life. There is no magic in the sense that the mechanics are intended to be explainable by science.
* Present best: There is advantage to those who are currently working or are active more than those who previously worked.
* Accumulative gain: There is long-term progress over time.
* Diversity: There is advantage in different kinds of people, skills, objects, locations, etc.
* Strategy: There is advantage to creative or purposeful strategy to reach goals.
* Balance: Maintain a sustainable, living world through the implementation of thoughtful systems that do not overemphasize one part at the cost of another (ie, production and consumption should be balanced, attacking and defending in combat should be balanced, etc.), so that no party has an in-built advantage, and so that the game can run indefinitely without risk of dramatic oversupply or undersupply (when effort is expended).
Before diving into this Train Travel Guide, some background information may be helpful:

Trains in the Real World
In real life, a train is a form of rail transport consisting of a series of connected vehicles that generally run along a railway track, and transports passengers and cargo (or "freight") between locations. Trains can only run along railway track, so are limited in where they can travel (unlike cars which can travel anywhere there is a flat, firm road surface) but are able to transport more goods at a more consistent speed than most motor vehicles, resulting in a more efficient, cost effective method of transport. In the industry, trains are referred to as "rolling stock" whereas the track the train runs on is the "permanent way." Trains travel on track - which generally consists of wooden, concrete or metal sleepers laid out in a bed of gravel ballast, with metal rails (standard or head-hardened steel for modern railways, or cast iron for older railway lines) fixed across them with spikes or screws.

Someone who drives a train is called a train driver. In North American Railway lingo, this train driver is often called an engineer, but internationally a railway engineer is someone with a civil engineering degree (or equivalent) who designs railway infrastructure.

Maintenance of railway lines is a very labour intensive process, though many machines now exist that make railway maintenance easier, and a number of issues can affect the track (which in turn affects the speed and safety of the train running along it). Generally, speaking, the poorer condition of the railway line, the slower a train must travel across it to prevent issues (such as misalignments, derailments, broken rails, etc.). Adverse weather can also affect the condition of the track, and also the speed of passing trains. In heavy rain, the track bed can wash away. Fires can destroy the wooden sleepers (or 'ties' in American rail lingo) and extreme heat can cause the metal rails to expand or contract unevenly, causing breaks and 'wiggles.'

For more information on how to roleplay aspects of railway maintenance, the RailCorp (NSW, Australia) handbook TMC 202 Track Fundamentals may be of value.

For more information on how to roleplay a train driver, honestly, go download and play any of the dozen various train simulator games out there.

See also, Wikipedia's Glossary of rail transport terms.

Trains in Cantr
Just as in real life, trains in Cantr move along vehicle connection types called railways, which can be built between towns just like normal roads. Trains cannot travel on normal roads (expressways, sand roads, etc.). For a train to be able to stop somewhere, that location must have a railway station present, otherwise the train will terminate only at the end of its railway line.

Trains move very slowly when uncontrolled, but it is possible for a driver to increase the speed of the train by maintaining a project to "Use train controls" - similar to the ongoing project "working reins" when mounted on a horse. Trains consume coal as fuel, and will move at their minimum speed value when unfueled.

Two types of trains currently exist - a passenger train, and a freight train variant. A passenger train can carry many more passengers and is more expensive, whereas a freight train can carry more cargo.

Your First Railway
Ready to start building your first Cantrian railway? You'll need at least a railway vehicle connection type, a railway station, and a train.

Railway Stations
A location can only have one railway station, and trains can generally* only stop in a town with a railway station (though exceptions exist, such as with railway barricades, or at the end of a railway line as a last resort). Trains will travel automatically along railways until they reach a railway station, and then they will terminate. Therefore, it's pretty important for a town to build a railway station. Trains, when stopped, will appear as vehicles INSIDE a railway station building, and can only be accessed from within the railway station.

Railway
The railway is a road connection type that allows for train travel between locations. Without this vehicle connection type, trains cannot travel. As a result, the most important part of your Cantrian railway will be your railway track - building and maintaining it (it will eventually decay without repair) are integral to Cantrian train systems.

Railways do not replace other vehicle connection types, and are not upgrades to existing roads, but are instead a totally separate road that exists alongside roads (such as sand roads, highways, expressways, etc.)

Trains
Once your location has a railway station, and there is railway connecting it to one or more other locations, you are finally ready to build your first train. Trains are built and named like any other vehicle, but once moved will appear within railway stations and not outside in a location under the vehicles tab.

Railway Barricades
Railway barricades can be built relatively quickly, and disassembled just as quickly, and when placed in a location block the railway vehicle connection type. Essentially, it will force a train to stop travelling along a railway, ending its travel in that location, and can be used to prevent train travel to towns and locations (for purposes of train robbery, etc.)

Only one railway barricade can be built in a location, and it must be built outside.

Your First Railway
Ready to start building your first Cantrian railway? You'll need at least a railway vehicle connection type, a railway station, and a train.

Railway Stations
A location can only have one railway station, and trains can generally* only stop in a town with a railway station (though exceptions exist, such as with railway barricades, or at the end of a railway line as a last resort.) Trains will travel automatically along railways until they reach a railway station, and then they will terminate. Therefore, it's pretty important for a town to build a railway station. Trains, when stopped, will appear as vehicles INSIDE a railway station building, and can only be accessed from within the railway station.

Cantr may seem confusing at first, but it takes a small ammount of time to adjust to the game. The important thing to remember is that you can do ANYTHING you want, within the confines of an already extensive programing. As it says on the front page, you could be anything from the most cunning military leader, to most beloved village idiot. This is perfectly true, and more besides. New features are always being introduced, to make the game much more dynamic, interesting and above all, more realistic.

Most advice given would be:

Do not take things and run, as soon as you create your first character. From experience, he/she will not last long.

Role play to the best of your ability. This will definitely improve your perception of the game, as it lets you interact much more with other characters. This can be very rewarding.

It's just a game, have fun! But do remember that your character believes he/she is real, and wont take being killed lightly ;)

The Capital Rule
<font size="+2">"In the Land of Cantr where the Shadows lie. One Rule to rule them all..."</font>

There is one Capital Rule that governs gameplay in Cantr II. Its formulation is simple, but it has many important ramifications:

The game must be played exclusively from the perspective of each individual character.

The spirit of the Capital Rule is that roleplay should be immersive. When you play your characters, imagine diving into their skin, and think from their perspective. None of the actions of your characters should be on the basis of your Out Of Character (OOC) knowledge as a player about other locations, fellow characters, maps, resources, or the history of the game; nor on the basis of your communication OOC with fellow players. That is, you as a player must develop your character solely within the game environment. Play your character from his or her in-game experiences, with his or her in-game knowledge, and taking his or her in-game personality and interests in mind.

Your own Out Of Character (OOC) knowledge may not be used to give your character an advantage over the characters of other players.

The information in this Wiki aside, you may use only the knowledge each character obtains on their own within the game. For example, if one of your characters witnesses an event, your other characters must act as if they have no knowledge of it until they learn for themselves independently in the game environment.

While each player is allowed to create multiple characters, those characters MUST be separate and distinct individuals. You may never use multiple characters together to help each other. Character death is permanent, and reincarnation or other transfer of knowledge or possessions from one to another is not allowed.

You may not have multiple characters as part of the same family, clan, army, company, etc.. They may not share resources, and they cannot join in any activity which profits one another, even from different locations. They must have their own individual interests and goals, and these may not intersect.

If you cannot avoid having two of your characters meet, it is best that one 'sleeps'. If interaction is unavoidable, you must carefully play as if they were played by strangers. But keep in mind, that since you as a player are controlling when your characters are awake and what they know, there are some intrinsic advantages to their interaction that no kind of roleplay can mitigate and which are unfair to other players.

Some exceptions are occasionally made in new and developing regions to allow players to have multiple characters living together. However, it’s never allowed to use more than one of your characters to drag or attack another character. The Players Department monitors gameplay in such cases, so if you believe your characters will be involved in exceptional circumstances, you should seek guidance from the PD beforehand.

You are allowed only one account, with no more than 15 characters. If you share a computer with another player, you must notify the Players Department. Only one player may access each account.

You may not plan or coordinate any in game events with other players OOC, even when to log in. It is not allowed to share maps, resource locations, or any other specific in game information with other players OOC.

Your characters should not have a background story describing the time before they spawned. They can have predetermined personalities or traits, and you can even have them act as if they have a back story, but this should not be made public to the other characters.

The Cantr world is entirely player created, and the history and culture of different locations can vary widely. Thus, it's a good idea to investigate each spawning location before fully determining each character's personality and goals.

There is no magic in Cantr. All characters are presumed to be human. You are free to create characters who believe strange things, but other characters may treat them as insane.

The Four-day Rule
It is not allowed to discuss events Out Of Character with other players that might influence any ongoing action. Even concluded events such as character deaths may not be discussed OOC in the forums, irc, or private communications for a minimum of Four days. This is known as the Four Day Rule.

The Foreign Language Rule
Each character spawns knowing only one language, no matter how many you as a player know. Your characters may travel or meet characters from other language zones and learn new languages in game. But, even if you as a player have knowledge of a second language OOC, you must roleplay for each character a language-learning process for a minimum of forty (40) days.
This Language Rule is to mitigate any advantage for multilingual players. You are, however, allowed during this process to describe the actions of your character using any common language, though your character may only speak words learned in game. It's understood that characters will learn grammar from experience, but some attempt should be made to explore it.
Machine translation such as google may aid in the language-learning process, but it is never a substitute for real world knowledge. You may not spawn a character in a language in which you have no working knowledge. Characters who use machine-generated language only are disruptive to native speakers and not allowed.

The Non-Consensual Sex Rule (NCS Rule)
There is no general prohibition against sexually explicit roleplay. However, Cantr II is open to players of all ages. Before engaging in any explicit sexual or violent roleplay, you must first secure OOC consent from an adult player. The Non-Consensual Sex Rule (NCS) entails that since minor players are considered incapable of providing consent, you must make every effort to ensure that explicit roleplay is not witnessed by them. Thus, you should avoid potentially offensive language in whispers which might be overheard in a crowd of characters of unknown players. You may request confirmation of player age from PD in private, but it is your responsibility to obtain consent.

Character Removal Request Policy
Any player wishing to have a character removed may send a written request to the Players Department, using the link "Contact Cantr II Departments" at the top left of the Player Page.

We will take a minimum of 24 hours to consider any requests.

Though we evaluate all requests on a case by case basis, there are some very important guidelines:
* All reasons for removing characters must be OOC. We will not be supplying a tool to aid anyone's roleplay.
* Further, your account's new character creation ability may be blocked for a time following deletions.
* Multiple requests from the same player within the same six month period will be automatically rejected.
* Any public discussion about your or anyone else's character deletion will be automatically rejected.
* Disruptive rp will be automatically rejected. The character's behavior should not be altered, just as it isn't when an account idles out, or a player unsubscribes.
* Young characters will not be considered for deletion except for exceptional circumstances of spawning.

----

The Players Department exists to help all players play fairly. You are encouraged to seek their advice whenever you are in doubt about the application of game rules to your individual situation. You can find links to send messages to the Players Department on your player page. You may also contact individual PD members via the game forum, or the irc chans.

The above rules must always be considered in context. Here is a summary and some important things to remember:

* You may only have one account.
* Your characters cannot be part of the same family or group.
* Character names must be unique, and you cannot recreate a dead character.
* Your characters may not help each other in any way: not by sharing resources, nor working together, nor influencing other characters to benefit each other.
* You may never use two characters to attack or drag another.
* You as a player cannot impart knowledge discovered by one of your characters to another: each character must discover for him or herself in game.
* You may not disseminate game information such as maps and resource locations outside of the game.
* You may never coordinate gameplay with other players OOC.
* You may not discuss ongoing events in game OOC, nor reveal any concluded event for at least four days.
* You should only spawn characters in languages in which you have some competence.
* You must roleplay learning a second language for your characters in game, even if you as a player have knowledge.
* You must obtain adult consent before engaging in explicit roleplay.
