The GAB is the main governing body of the game. It is made up of the Chairs of each Cantr staff department, chaired by the Game Founder, Jos Elkink. It appoints new staff members, sets access privileges of game administrators, and sets the overall policies which guide the direction of the game. The exact role of the GAB is defined in the Cantr Organizational Constitution.

Role within the game
The Resources Department is responsible for the organisation of raw materials in Cantr. This includes managing the list of raw material types, the list of objects and machines and the animals and clothes visible in game. This department works closely together with the programming department in managing the list of objects in the game, and in working on the in game balance of newly programmed game features. The aim of this department is to keep an interesting balance in the game in terms of resources and building requirements and to keep a certain level of complexity in the industrial process in the game.

Applying to this department
What are needed in this department are people who are interested in developing the resources and building requirements in game and can combine ideas with a knowledge of how they could be balanced with current implementations. Writing descriptions and defining requirements are a large part of the technical side of this role, and a good level of English is preferable. It is the department’s responsibility to work out the detail once the general idea has been approved by a member of Game Administration, and a good attention to detail is essential.

All changes are made using forms on the website, which will be extensively explained before you will use them. Some are more technical than others, but there is definitely no need for any programming experience.

Members of this department will need to interact directly with the players who make requests through the Suggestion forums. As members will also be working closely with each other to determine the best course of action, a good ability to communicate is necessary.

Specialist roles such as Tailor and Shepherd have been used in the past for staff members with a concentration of interest and expertise in certain areas. The same requirements exist for these roles as for any other role as detailed above, with the exception of a higher knowledge base.
Under the policy leadership of the Game Administration Council and the daily management of the Game Administration Board, different departments concentrate on different aspects of running the game.

The Programming Department concentrates on the development and maintenance of the source code of Cantr. If you experience any bugs in the software, you should report them to bugs@cantr.net or add them to Flyspray. The Players Department is responsible for helping Cantr players to understand the game and to check whether players are following the few Game Rules we have in the game. Better to keep the PD as your friends ;) ...
The Marketing Department is responsible for making Cantr as well-known as possible in the outside world. You are probably reading about the game thanks to their work.
The Languages Department is responsible for translating the game into a large number of languages, so that non-English speakers can play in their own languages. This is not only nice for them, it also adds an interesting intercultural dimension to the game, as all language groups play in the same virtual world.

The New Lands Department was responsible for creating new islands and adding animals, roads, and resources to them, however, has been disbanded.
The Communications Department is responsible for managing and entertaining the community of players of Cantr. They publish the Cantr Webzine, they moderate the Cantr Forum (link) and Cantr Chat Channel, and they sometimes come up with new ideas to keep you informed and entertained outside playing Cantr itself.
Would it be possible to make a true multi-language setup, similar to Wikipedia's? I don't know what's involved in making that work (I have a suspicion that it's not feasile here), but it's kind of annoying when half of the time Special:Random brings up a Polish page; also crosslinking articles is rather inelegant with the current system. It would make things a lot neater if we could use categories and templates to standardize the presentation of items and such. Virtually all of the information in here right now is begging to be categorized. I can't do it myself, not having any experience actually creating those, but does anyone else? == Agglomeration vs. subdivision ==

Some categories of items, such as tools, have all of their elements listed on the same page. Others, such as resources, have separate pages for everything. My gut instinct (as a Wikipedian) is to split everything into separate pages and use categories to tie them together, but I can see why we might want to keep things in big metapages - it's similar to the format found in IC guides, often the individual data aren't big enough for individual articles, and it would be loads of unrewarding data-entry grunt work. Anyone have any opinion? Sho
* It's not clear how much of the stuff here is data from Programming or Resources Department people (and therefore probably complete and correct) and how much is contributions from players like me (and therefore likely to need verification). For example, I'm not sure how much to trust the data on the ability of certain boat types to dock to each other; I feel that it looks like some types were left out, but I can't be sure. Some way of, say, putting a stamp of approval on information would be excellent. Sho

There are many different animals in the Cantr world. These are the only non-player characters in the game - all other characters you encounter are played by other players like you.

Animals in Cantr are always living in groups or packs, but a pack can be only one animal large. Animals can reproduce, travel from one place to another, and attack characters. In return, you can attack animals and when you kill them, you'll get some products such as bones (big and/or small), meat, sinew, hide, fur or feathers. (What you get depends on the type of animal.) Usually the animal parts end up in your inventory but if there's not enough room, they fall on the ground.

There are plans to 'individualise' animals, so that they do not live in packs anymore, which will allow for new features like animals entering (and being locked up in) buildings or vehicles, animals being domesticated, etc. But this is all future planning which might take some time.
