The fueled version of the [[Sawing bench]] is the Sawing machine. The central part of any decent sawmill, the sawing machine produces [[lumber]] and [[wood]] the fastest and with the most efficiency.

However, it comes at a price since it requires the sophisticated [[car engine A parts]] in addition to three [[small chain]]s and a [[steel saw blade]]. But the price paid isn't only in materials—the Sawing machine requires [[fuel]] too.

The kite shield is an improved version of the [[iron shield]] and the second best shield in Cantr. It's made by attaching a [[leather strap]] and [[leather enarmes|enarmes]] and some extra [[iron]] to a basic [[iron shield]]. A full set of [[weapon-smithing tools]] are required. The kite shield can be embellished by plating it with [[silver]], [[gold]] or [[platinum]], making it into a [[silver plated kite shield]], a [[gold plated kite shield]], or a [[platinum plated kite shield]]. But this is merely a show of wealth and doesn't make the shield any stronger.

The kite shield is the second shield that can act as a weapon, but like the [[targe]], because it isn't designed for attacking, it deals low damage.

''We left Cassidy and Jack to guard the ship, and beached the longboat. A wet, soupy jungle met us almost as soon as we stepped off the boat - there was only a few feet of coast, and then those dark, foreboding trees. Strange animals ran along the rocks in the sand, and hauntingly beautiful birdsong called out to us from all directions.

''We pressed on, following the map, and only a few hours later had arrived at our destination. It was a sunken clearing in the jungle, surrounded by weathered stone statues and piles of stacked bone. A single stone building stood in the center of that circle of monoliths. The door had rotted away long ago; the captain went in first, and I followed her. Everyone else stayed outside, on alert.

''The inside of the building was covered in gold plating - the floor, the walls, the ceiling. In the center of the room there was a stone table, and on top of that table, there the spear sat. It was breathtaking. It was easily six feet long and made of some strange metal - stronger than steel, lighter than aluminum - that seemed to absorb the light rather than reflect it. It had a broad, triangular point on one end, and at its end there was a rounded knob of solid diamond as big as my fist. The entire shaft had been ornately decorated and inlaid with gold, swirling runes. The leather protecting the shaft had rotted away, and words were visible beneath where the flimsy scraps still remained:

''WHAT MAN HAS WRITTEN, MAN MAY READ. WHAT GODS HAVE MADE, NO MAN MAY KNOW.

''Below it, a severed skeletal hand. Outside, Fallon was already dying. One of those great monoliths had toppled over onto him with a tremendous crash, and someone was screaming.

''We took the spear back to the ship, not thinking anything of the cryptic words written on it, and set sail for Cantr island, already several days behind schedule. A storm was brewing and we took pains to outpace it, trying to put distance between ourselves and the memory of Fallon's crushed body beneath the stone, and the slow death that had been his: anguished crying, one lung crushed, his spine crushed, his legs crushed, his heart slowly pumping blood into his stomach cavity, his intestines pulped. We had a good heading, and everything was uneasily calm until the day Henry slipped and was impaled by the large trawling hooks we used to bring in the sharks and smaller whales. It happened in the middle of the night, during his watch, and Cassidy found him in the morning. His face had been frozen in a terrified moan. His eyes had been clawed out by birds. Cassidy was next, only a few hours after that. She dove headfirst into the sea and we never saw her again. After her, the curse took Lefty Jon. He pointed his crossbow at his eye and pulled the trigger. The bolt tip jutted out the back of his head. The quarrels crusted with blood and fluid. The storm washed him overboard.

''I am the last. I took the spear out of the cabin and threw it into the ocean, but I can feel it still, even now, like it's right beside me. The weight of it lingers in my palms. The touch of that metal had burnt, and seared. It is a presence. It calls to something beneath the waves. I want to slit my throat. It's fear. That's what it is. Fear and love and a wild lust all rolled into one. It calls to something beneath the waves, and it calls to me, and even though we'd outrun the storm, the water surrounding the ship continues to roil and churn. The frequency of clothing varies upon regions, depending on the materials available and the local level of technology. It is also a question of personal values and preferences since currently clothing exists only for the social aspects. It doesn't shield you from damage, allow you to carry more or protect you from the weather (since such a thing doesn't exist yet), but it may arouse respect or envy in your fellow characters.

Concerning technological development, the lowest rung of the ladder consists of clothing made of unprocessed materials, such as [[hide]], [[fur]], [[bones]] and [[flowers]]. [[Grass]] clothing can be expected in the future, and some regions are lucky enough to have [[reed]].

The next step is items that require some solid investments, but no metals are needed. A [[curing tub]] is required to make [[leather]], and a [[spindle]] to make yarn out of wool and other fibres. Both of these need to be sheltered from the elements, i.e. placed inside a [[:Category:Buildings|building]], but houses can be made out of wood and mud without having to use metal tools (such as the [[trowel]]).

Weaving cloth requires a [[loom]], which in turn requires [[iron]]. This is the third rung. [[Glass beads]] can also be placed here, since the [[glass oven]] is also made with iron but no [[steel]] is involved. However, most uses for glass beads require a [[soldering iron]] or a pair of [[scissors]], so even if you managed to make them, using them would currently be pretty much impossible without steel level technology.

The fourth step is advanced tailoring, where pieces must be cut precisely with scissors. (Scissors must be sharpened with a [[file]], which is made mostly of steel.) Most of the [[:Category:Silk clothing|silk items]], as well as the finest of the [[:Category:Cotton clothing|cotton clothing]] reside in this category.

Regardless of the ever growing selection, many people still choose to remain wearing "[[nothing worth mentioning]]", and also there are those unfortunate ones who have no suitable resources. So if you can't find anything to wear, in the majority of places that's hardly a shame.

Explanation: This is usually caused by either someone accidentally double-clicking the undock/continue to break a lock button or using the back button on the browser with weird results, or they may have done something fishy in general. Just ignore it. And remember not to use the back button on the browser, instead use the back buttons provided by the game.

=== The server is down ===
Description: I get a white page with a message that says Cantr is being backed up / the forums are replaced by a text that says "could not connect to database" / the wiki says "Too many connections".

Explanation: Sometimes the server gets a bit too busy. Just wait a while and it should be back up. There is no longer a daily maintenance break so that message that appears is a bit outdated.

=== Dragging project is at over 100% ===
Description: On the character list page the percentage complete by the name of a character dragging person or pulling a note, envelope or item displays a value over 100%.

Solution: Cancel project and start again. If the project is assisted by people on a different location than the target being moved (for example when a person or a corpse is being dragged from a bike or a boat), the person who's at the same location with the target must be the one to make the final tug in order to make it work.

=== I can't pass things whilst traveling on foot ===
Solution: This isn't a bug. You'll have to wait until you reach your destination.

On the other hand, if you are in a vehicle, you can pass objects to characters walking on the road - just see it as the vehicle being faster, and able to pull-up alongside walking characters.

=== I finished a project for a building/vehicle/landmark but it's not there! ===
Solution: Don't use HTML, or apostrophes, or hyphens, or anything else but alphanumeric characters (to be on the safe side) when naming buildings or vehicles - or they're likely to get all manner of weird things happening to them... Contact the Programming Department with details of the missing building. If you have a forum account, you can post in the sticky topic in General Support titled "Report missing/misplaced vehicles

===Error: You are not allowed to view events for other characters===
Description: Caused by use of the browser back button. You are then redirected to the character listing. Also Firefox 3.x doesn't seem to be compatible with Cantr in some systems. The bug generally presents itself after picking up or dropping a resource, starting a project or a whole bunch of things. If this is happening to you, I recommend using some other browser, at least if you're going to be starting projects or dealing with resources.

Solution: Do not use the browser's back button. Most Cantr pages have an embedded back button (a green arrow pointing to the left) or a link that says Back.

=== Error: You cannot pick up this fixed object ===
Description: Happens when you go halfway through starting a project with a [[Machinery|machine]], for example to see how much resources would be needed, then use the browser back button to go back to the Objects list and click on another item. The game interprets it so that you are trying to pick up the machine. Also, a project with the outcome of 0 grams is created.

Solution: Don't click on other machinery after toying with one. Also remember to go to Activities and cancel the 0 project because it's blocking the machine from being used for a few days unless you cancel it.

=== A resting object is in use but there's no one else in the room ===

Description: Happens when the person who was resting on the piece of furniture died or got dragged away. If you look at the activities list, you will see an inactive resting project. Clicking the cancel button will cause a "this project has already been worked on, it cannot be removed" error.

Solution: Click on the P (participate) button for the project, then click on the small X to cancel your participation. The project will vanish.

=== I can't use a machine because every time I get some error and get redirected ===

Explanation: This is caused by the Firefox incompatibility issue and it only affects machines that have only one type of project, for example [[limestone quarry|limestone quarries]].

Solution: Use some other browser for starting the project.

=== I killed someone on a bike and the corpse didn't fall out ===

Explanation: Actually corpses don't fall out automatically because it hasn't been implemented. Corpses are removed manually by ProgD if there's not enough room for someone to enter and drag it out.

Solution: Post in the sticky topic called "Dead bodies" on the General Support forum and mention the name of the vehicle that's stuck.

=== Animals are not reproducing ===

Description: Animals are supposed to reproduce in proportion to their numbers. They no longer reproduce at all. Animals in empty towns have been completely eliminated.

Solution: Be careful what you hunt. Until the bug is fixed, animal numbers can only go down.

Many players are quickly discouraged when playing Cantr because of a somewhat steep learning curve and a possibly harsh first few days. This little text will help you through them.

=== Accessing characters ===

Once your account is accepted, and you log in for the first time, you will see on the [[Interface Guide#Main Page|player page]] a list of your characters. You can access your character by clicking on the little smiling face in front of his or her name:

== People and events ==

The first time you log in, the character's events page will probably be mostly empty. The first day, the events page is sometimes very boring. Depending on the population size and the activity level of the town it may take a day or more for interesting events to begin to appear. Reading this events page is the best way to understand the basic mechanism of the game as well as the people and activities of the town.

You might see things like "You see a man in his twenties talking to a woman in her thirties." You can't hear what they're saying because it's in private. Also you don't know much about them save for the gender and approximate age. But if you click on the short description ("a man in his twenties"), it opens the character description page where you can see various information about the particular character, some buttons for interacting with them and the naming box.

Note that none of the people at that location - of which you can see a list by clicking on the [[Interface Guide#People Page|people page]] link - is an artificial character; each and every one of them is played by a real player, just as your character is.

=== Naming people ===

You could actually write anything you want for the character's name, since this only affects how you see them displayed in events and on the people page, but generally people tend to wait until the character introduces him or herself, then copy-paste that name to the form. Likewise other people don't know what to call you until you introduce yourself. That's why it's generally appreciated when your character gives his or her name on the first day, since all others will see you as 'a woman in her twenties' or the masculine equivalent of that.

=== Talking to others ===

A very good start is for your character to say his or her name and that they have just arrived there. Use the little form on top of the events list, type in the words of your character, and press the 'Talk to all' button. Everybody at that location will now be able to read what your character has said once they log in (most likely not immediately, since players are often not online at the same time). When you check the events page next time, you are likely to see some response.

If you want to talk to someone in specific, you can click on their name (or the short description if you haven't named them yet) and click on the icon with a speech bubble. This opens a form where you can write your message. This is often called whispering since outsiders cannot hear what you're saying, and extensive private conversations may be considered impolite or suspicious. So unless it's a very busy location, or you're discussing private matters, it's often better to just "talk to all" and address the target by name.

When your character speaks, keep in mind that you are always [[Roleplay|writing from the perspective of your character]] - it is not you (the player) talking, but your character. Don't refer to the world outside the game when your character talks. Your character knows only what he or she has directly and personally encountered in Cantr. So things like "Is anyone online" or "How do you play this game" should strictly be avoided or clearly marked as [[OOC]] if you really have to say it.

Also, remember that communication in Cantr is not instant. The result of this is that smilies and abbreviations such as "lol" are usually frowned upon. There is no hurry, so you might as well use full words or even sentences. If you wish to express an [[Emoting|action]], rather than words, the custom is to enclose the action with asterisks. (Example: Hello. *smiles*) As with everything else, there is a point where this gets overused.

== Dealing with objects ==

When you click on 'objects' you enter the [[Interface Guide#Objects Page|objects page]], where you can see all objects which are laying on the ground. Everybody at that location can also see those objects.

It is '''strongly advised''' that you read the notes on the ground before doing anything else at that location. Often among these notes is a set of laws or rules that have been established for that region and in some places you will be dealt with harshly if you ignore those laws. Laws may exist on whether hunting is allowed, whether you can gather your own food or resources, whether you can whisper to others, whether you are allowed to leave the town, etc. - laws can exist on any possible behaviour. Those laws are not defined by the game designer, but by the characters at that location. Your character is, in the beginning, very vulnerable - he or she has no food, no clothes, no weapons - so the actions and choices your character makes will greatly affect his or her present and future life!

Unlike conventions in many other games, things on the ground in Cantr are not necessarily free for anyone who wants them. Objects may be on the ground temporarily for various reasons, and the owners will consider taking those objects to be theft. In a similar vein, just because you are physically able to enter a building does not mean that you will be welcome to do so by the building's owner. Again, be sure to read each town's rules.

=== Copying notes ===

In the past a character had to pick up a [[note]] before being able to copy it, but nowadays you can just click on the copy button

which appears next to the note title on the objects page. The copy will then appear in your character's inventory. You can also make copies of notes that are already in your inventory by using the similar button there. However it's currently not possible to destroy notes so if you create one, the only way of getting rid of it is by stuffing it in an envelope or dropping it (which will eventually make the objects page look messy and someone might eventually get irritated by it and shove them in a trash envelope). Some notes may be uneditable which means you cannot alter their contents, and also each copy of them will automatically be made uneditable. Regular notes can be edited, wiped and recycled without limitations.

=== How to take things ===

You will see arrow buttons next to the objects on the ground. Logically the up arrow

means "take this object". When you click on it, the item will be moved into your character's [[Interface Guide#Inventory Page|inventory]]. (If it's a resource then you need to specify how many grams to pick up as well.) However you should note that just because something is laying on the ground, it isn't necessarily abandoned. So generally it's wise to ask if it's OK before taking anything, or your character might risk being accused of thievery. Even taking notes may count if it's the last copy, because then others cannot see it.

=== Food ===

One of the first things to worry about is food. In some locations, you are free to gather this yourself. Just go to the [[Interface Guide#Location Page|location page]], and click on the pictogram in front of any of the [[nourishing food|edible resources]] on that location. Once you gathered some food, your character will [[Auto-eat|automatically eat]] on a daily basis (if the food is edible without being cooked or processed). Some foods are for healing only and cannot be used for daily nourishment. But, as said, read the notes on the ground first! In some locations, gathering food for yourself is forbidden or limited, because there is a limit on how many people can be gathering resources at once. Some locations also have free food available for newspawns or special work programs for them. Find this out first if you want your character to avoid jail or even mob execution.

This should help you out to avoid disappointment when your character is immediately imprisoned or killed for breaking the law. Because there is no special protection for the characters of new players in Cantr, you may want to be conservative in your character's actions at first.
